                             Fresh Apple Bread

      1/2  cup           shortening
    1      cup           sugar
    1      each          egg
    2      cups          plain flour
    1      teaspoon      baking soda
    1      teaspoon      cinnamon
    2      cups          apples (or more) -- pared & chopped
      2/3  cup           nuts -- chopped
      1/2  teaspoon      cloves -- ground
      1/2  teaspoon      salt
 
 Cream together shortening and sugar. Add egg; beat well. Sift together
 flour, soda, salt, cloves and cinnamon. Add to shortening mixture; then
 stir in apples and nuts. Pour into 9 greased loaf pan. Bake 1 hour at 350º
 
 Let stand until cool. Remove bread from pan and sprinkle with
 confectioner’s sugar.
