                               PLAIN MUFFINS

    4      tablespoons   shortening
    2      tablespoons   sugar
    1                    egg
    3      teaspoons     baking powder
      1/2  teaspoon      salt
    1      cup           milk
    2      cups          flour
 
 Cream shortening and sugar, then beat in well beaten egg.  Add sifted dry
 ingredients alternately with milk.  Fill muffin tins 2/3 full.  Bake in
 moderate oven.
