Cut the onions in half cross-wise. Arrange onions in a single layer in a shallow dish. Whisk the remaining ingredients together, then pour over the onions. Allow the onions to marinate for one to two hours, turning the onions about half-way through. Grill the onions beneath a broiler on high or over an outdoor barbeque for approximately 10 minutes, turning the onions after 5 minutes.
